Subsidence Investigation and Mitigation
Subsidence Investigation and Mitigation We apply state-of-practice geophysical imaging and emerging technologies to accurately and cost-effectively detect and define the location of subsurface voids associated with abandoned mines, lava tubes, sinkholes, and karst topography that has achieved unparalleled success. We have used these tools to solve our clients’ problems in the mining, transportation, and infrastructure sectors. We have professional geologists, and geotechnical, civil, and mining engineers on staff to perform subsidence evaluations and develop mitigation strategies.

As part of comprehensive geophysical investigations performed for the Mine Safety and Health Administration, we have pioneered the Reverse Seismic Vertical Profiling method to detect and define the boundaries of subsurface voids. Originally developed for the detection of abandoned coal mines, this technique has proven more accurate and reliable than the traditional method of boring holes to locate voids. In addition to locating voids using seismic methods,we can map the void space using tethered robots with laser or sonar mapping capabilities.

As part of geophysical investigations performed for the Federal Highway Administration – Central Federal Lands Highway Division, we have developed practical tools to detect lava tubes (voids) beneath roadways. The results of this work have provided the engineering team and construction crew with valuable subsurface information for risk assessment, design, and road rehabilitation and construction.
